Les Yeux Noirs, a French band who play Gypsy and Yiddish music with traditional instruments, electric guitar and electronic sampling. At the Arches again, this time seated but that didn't stop everyone from getting up and dancing. This was their first time in Scotland and the reception was fantastic.

Friday night was also lots of fun. Lunasa, an Irish band, were fine and foot-tapping, and so were Le Vent du Nord, who are French Canadian and sang interesting and different stuff, with marvellous vocals. Afterwards I went along to the Holiiday Inn, where there were lots of musicians in the bar playing each other tunes. I always love that about a music festival, that you can find the place where the players aren't ready to give up.

On Friday the venue, the Old Fruitmarket, was newly renovated and that was the opening night, so of course there was a fire alarm. Outside on Candleriggs we were all standing around when we heard music coming from one of the flats, a popular song by a popular Scottish band that everyone started singing along to. The people up in the flat opened their windows wider and it became a party in the street, in the rain. They then tried to find other music that we would sing to but it was a tough crowd, until they got out a guitar and a banjo and started performing Duelling Banjos, leaning out of the second-storey window, playing brilliantly.

It was one of those "you had to be there" kind of nights.
