My Celtic music festival begins . . .
Jan. 12th, 2006 11:27 pm... With an English band, the Levellers.
I've been a fan of the Levellers since their first album came out and they were touring in support of New Model Army. I've seen them live maybe three times in total and tonight was just as good as ever. The Arches in Glasgow is a small venue and the crowd was just enough to give a good atmosphere without a crush, mostly of old-guard fans who were jumping up and down in front of the stage and singing along. It was a brilliant gig, with a good set; early on there were new songs alternating one of each with old favourites, then later they alternated standards with numbers from early albums. It's been a great night. I'm a happy man.
There's more to come, too. In Glasgow there is a folk music festival every year, called Celtic Connections. It lasts for three weeks and has over 400 shows. This has been the first year I have been in a position to go to any of it, and I got a festival membership from my parents for Christmas. I have a lot of free tickets to bands that are great and bands that I've never heard of, and member's invites to various receptions and parties. Plus I got some cash that I spent on more concerts with my member's discount.
The first thing that I went to was a pre-festival members' reception on Monday, with music provided by the Lori Watson Trio. They have a CD coming out soon, so if you like Scottish music, look out for it. They are young and talented and really good.
Tomorrow I'm going to see Lunasa supported by Le Vent du Nord, and I'm not going to see Steeleye Span, with Maddy Prior. I'm also not going to see Deacon Blue, but I wouldn't anyway.
