Lou Anders, in this post about 'Lou vs. Star Wars', comments that media tie-ins are important because, among other reasons, the Heinlein juveniles are out of date.

I'm interested in this for several reasons - What, apart from the technology, dates them? What made them important to SF readers in the first place? Anders and his commenters consider whether Star Wars novelisations might be the new entry level for people not up to reading Accelerando, taking the place of the Heinleins. Is that necessary and the Heinleins should be relegated to being classic curiosities that nobody reads? Should somebody be writing non-media SF juveniles and teen-market novels to meet this need? Could anybody possibly replace Heinlein?

If anyone's looking at this, I'd be interested in their opinion and to see if there's a discussion in it. I may poke my nose into Anders' comments as well. When I've time and if anyone shows some interest, I'll post my own opinions.
