Out on the tiles
Feb. 10th, 2008 03:01 amI went with my friends to Club Noir this evening. This is a burlesque club in Glasgow's Carling Academy, a few times each year. It's huge; think almost the size of the Town & Country Club for Londoners, a decent sized rock venue.
It has a strict dress code, so of course I was going to dress up, and the theme this time was Valentine in Paris. This was my chance to take my corset out for a spin. In the afternoon, I went shopping with Emma, round all the charity shops and vintage clothes stores in Glasgow town centre. Not much to be had, until I found a lovely skirt in Mr Ben. Emma found a dress there to die for and I ran into Aoife and Helena also shopping there.
Eventually I went with this green A-line skirt that had a net petticoat, with the corset on top over a black vest, and Emma had a swatch of fabric almost the same as the skirt that made a very neat stole. A black flower pinned in my hair, lace tights and black court shoes, et voila! a can-can girl. Emma was apologising to me, that I was going to end up looking like a Paris prostitute, but I didn't go nuts with my makeup and a lot of the girls there this evening had not got the idea of burlesque and were just swanning around in their underwear looking tarty. I was fine.
I have to say that the acts at the club didn't impress. I enjoyed the Ministry of Burlesque High Tease evenings much better, but I had a great time in the club and I got lots of compliments, including from Neil, who I work beside and who was there with his girlfriend and her friends. Apparently she had expected me to look like a drag queen and was most impressed that I didn't. Her friend Dani is really cute as well, and was smiling nicely to me. And I was dancing in my high heels. Not much, but I did it.
