It's started ...
Jan. 17th, 2008 08:03 pmMonday evening was the Celtic Connections Friends' reception, to which I get an invite because I buy the Friends membership. Previously this has been a time of standing drinking the free booze and not much else, but now I've been going a while I'm starting to recognise the other usual suspects and chatting. The usual suspects will also be going to a lot of the same concerts I'm going to over the next three weeks.
And last night was the opening concert, which I've never been to before. Apparently a different style of production; previously they were grandiose affairs but this one was like a session with a lot of the best around all turning up and doing a couple of numbers. John McCusker led it, and there were such people as Kate Rusby, Michael McGoldrick, Karine Polwart, and Mike Scott singing and playing. One of the high points for me was Karan Carey singing the Billy Bragg song, "Distant Shore". I've got to learn that one. Also fun was Karine Polwart's "Easy as One Two Three".
Then afterwards was the Director's reception, to which I also had a ticket, and once again with the free booze and the usual suspects. And ... the performers! I got to have a chat with Kate Rusby, who is absolutely delightful. And with Karine Polwart, who is also nice.
I have a ticket to the Festival Club this evening, but I'm going to my bed instead, even though Steve Earle is likely to be doing a spot. The Club starts after all the gigs are over and goes on till two or three in the morning. It's a school night tonight. I'll go tomorrow.
